Types of Fabric Used In Jeans

Jeans are typically made from a type of cotton known as denim. Denim is a sturdy, durable fabric that is resistant to tearing and fading, making it well-suited for pants that will be worn frequently and subjected to a lot of wear and tear. Denim is made by weaving together yarns of different colors, usually indigo blue and white, which creates the characteristic blue color of jeans. Denim can be stretchable or non-stretchable, depending on how it is woven and the materials used. Some brands also use other materials like spandex, polyester, or Tencel to make the denim stretchy or to give it a softer feel.

Type of denim

There are several types of denim that can be used to make jeans, each with its own unique properties and characteristics. Some of the most common types include:

Raw denim: This type of denim is untreated and undyed, and is usually dark blue in color. It is stiff and can take several months of wear before it starts to soften and form to the wearer’s body.

Selvedge denim: Selvedge denim is made on shuttle looms, which produce a tight, clean edge on the fabric. Selvedge denim is considered to be of higher quality and is often more expensive than other types of denim.

Stretch denim: Stretch denim is made with a small percentage of elastane or spandex, which gives it a slight stretch and a more comfortable fit.

Distressed denim: Distressed denim is pre-worn and pre-faded, giving it a vintage or worn-in look. This type of denim is often achieved by sandblasting, whiskering or other techniques.

Black denim: Black denim is made by dyeing the denim black, rather than the traditional indigo blue.

Lightweight denim: Lightweight denim is made with a lighter weight yarn and can be used to make summer or spring clothing

Coated denim: Coated denim is treated with a coating to give it a glossy or shiny finish. This type of denim is often used to make fashion-forward, trendy styles.

Slub denim: Slub denim is made with yarns that have slight variations in thickness, giving the fabric a textured, irregular appearance.

Japanese denim: Japanese denim is made with a specific type of cotton grown in Japan, and is known for its high quality and durability. It is often considered to be some of the best denim in the world.

Organic denim: Organic denim is made from organic cotton that is grown without the use of chemical pesticides or fertilizers. It is considered to be more environmentally-friendly than traditional denim.

Recycled denim: Recycled denim is made from post-consumer or post-industrial denim waste, which reduces the environmental impact of denim production.

Non-Denim: Non-Denim is made from different fabrics but with the similar looks and feel of denim, such as cotton blend, Tencel, linen or rayon, this type of denim is for people who are looking for different or more comfortable options.

Each of these types of denim has its own unique properties and characteristics, and can be used to create a wide range of styles and designs. The right type of denim will depend on the specific needs and preferences of the designer and the end-consumer.
